    Source: Blogcritics The African nation of Chad is in the middle of a hunger crisis as drought has struck, ruining the country's food supply. (..)The World Food Programme (WFP) is providing school feeding in Chad as part of its response to the crisis.     Niger struggles to feed itself at the best of times – these are the worst of times

    Source: The Guardian Humanitarian organisations estimate that 1.3 million people are suffering from acute malnutrition across the Sahel, a belt of countries from Mauritania and Senegal on the Atlantic to Chad in central Africa, taking in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. (..) The question is whether Niger and other Sahel countries will receive enough help for such measures at a time of financial crisis in the west. (..) In the region of Oullam, about an hour and a half's drive from the capital, Niamey, the World Food Programme's food-for-work scheme means families receive grain, vegetables and oil for three months in return for work designed to build up the community's ability to sustain itself.

    Source: Alertnet Aid groups have warned that hunger threatens between 5 and 9 million people in countries in Africa's Sahel region just below the Sahara including Chad, Niger, Mauritania, Burkina Faso and Mali.     Drought returns to West Africa’s Sahel, bringing hunger as crisis looms

    For the third time in the past decade, drought has returned to the arid, western shoulder of Africa, bringing hunger to millions. (..) “The increasing frequency of droughts in the Sahel means that communities have had little time to recover from the last food crisis,” according to Malek Triki, the Dakar-based spokesman for the U.N. World Food Program. “Their savings are exhausted and livestock herds have not been rebuilt.”
