Ambassador Against Hunger
Ms. Franca Sozzani was appointed as a WFP Global Ambassador Against Hunger on14 May 2014. A native of Italy, Ms. Franca Sozzani is one of the world’s most recognized magazine editors and influential leaders in fashion. She has served as the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Italia beginning in 1988 and, since 1994, been the editorial director of Condé Nast Italia, which publishes 15 magazines and has five websites.
Ms. Sozzani has been a staunch advocate for social and political change. She has used her print and social media platforms to promote awareness among her more than 2 million readers and users.
This includes stimulating discourse on issues of race (The Vogue Black Issue) and challenging society’s traditional perspectives of women’s physical appearance (The Vogue Curvy Issue). She has similarly created the Vogue Talent website to help identify emerging fashion designers throughout the world.
Ms. Sozzani commitment extends to her personal participation and promotion of different charities. She, along with Mr. Jonathan Newhouse (President of Condé Nast International) co-founded the non-for-profit, Child Priority, which supports international charities.
She serves in a leadership role for Fashion4Development, a global organization committed to helping the United Nations promoting the Millennium Development Goals and the UN initiative, “Every Woman Every Child”.
She is also involved in the Italian organization, CONVIVO, which raises funds and awareness of HIV-AIDS, and has helped mobilize resources for the non-government-organization, Dubai Cares.
Ms. Sozzani has been instrumental in raising awareness and funding for WFP’s school feeding and gender empowerment activities. She has also played a key role in mobilizing public support for WFP’s emergency operations in the Central African Republic (C.A.R.) and our C.A.R. Can’t Wait campaign.
