Cash and Vouchers Stories
Hundreds of newly constructed gardens are producing nutritious fruit and vegetables for families and communities in the Santa Cruz area of eastern Bolivia. Managed by the families and communities themselves, the gardens were built as part of a pilot project that WFP supported with food vouchers, allowing the recipients to concentrate on their futures rather than their immediate food needs.
Ali, a 35-year-old Syrian refugee in Lebanon, has a lot on his shoulders. As he struggles to provide for his own family and that of his missing brother, an electronic food card from WFP is taking off some of the strain.
In Somalia, the World Food Programme is shifting its focus from providing emergency responses to enabling vulnerable Somalis to improve their ability to deal with shocks. WFP helps people create communal assets, such as roads, and also provides training so that Somalis are better able to withstand future droughts and floods.
Since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, thousands of its people have returned from Sudan to their homeland. The World FoodProgramme is easing these families’ reintegration by providing food assistance and cash transfers.
In Jordan’s biggest refugee camp, WFP has begun a shift in the way it provides food to families who have fled the conflict in Syria. Instead of traditional food rations, refugees are being introduced to vouchers, which allow them to start buying their own food. With products like cheese and eggs now more accessible, the initial reaction has been enthusiastic.
