Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn - Goodwill Ambassador
As the third child of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit of Thailand, Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is officially known as Her Royal Highness Princess of Thailand. However, Maha Chakri's expertise in using new technologies to promote development - she holds a degree in Educational Development - has won her the unofficial title of the Princess of Information Technology.
Since 1980, the Princess has also overseen several social development projects which focus on improving the nutrition and health status of children in Thailand's remote communities.
Because of her humanitarian commitment and her background in child nutrition, in October 2004, WFP invited Princess Sirindhorn to become a Goodwill Ambassador for School Feeding, to help promote the benefits of the agency's Food for Education projects.
In 2005, WFP's school feeding programme, which provides free school meals as an incentive for poor families to keep their children in class, reached 6.5 million school children across Asia. "During school visits, I have noticed that food plays an imprtant part in the success of students," says Princess Sirindhorn.
"Malnutrition hinders the physical, mental and cognitive development of children." Within months of joining WFP, HRH Princess Sirindhorn was supporting the agency's efforts to provide emergency food aid to schools located along the southern coast of Thailand, which was badly hit by the December 2004 tsunami.
