Centre hosts technical debate on nutrition and food fortification

The Centre of Excellence will host a technical debate on nutrition and food fortification on April 15. The goal is to promote exchange of technical, historical, and conceptual information on the different strategies to tackle and prevent the relevant nutritional deficiencies in Brazil, among practitioners, policy makers, and academics.

Delegations from three countries participate in study visit to Brazil

From April 7 to 17, the Centre of Excellence will host a study visit for three countries. Delegations from Benin, Burundi and Togo will arrive in Brazil to learn about the Brazilian experiences in fighting hunger and poverty. The combination of delegations from different countries will allow that the exchange of experiences happen not only with Brazil, but also between the visiting countries.

The 15th annual Global Child Nutrition Forum (GCNF) will be held in Bahia, Brazil between May 20-24 2013. The event will bring public and private sectors together to discuss school feeding programmes as a national investment as well as its impacts on social and economic development. The Forum aims to promote policy dialogue among different stakeholders involved in the design and implementation of sustainable school feeding programmes.

The 2013 GCNF is being organised by WFP Centre of Excellence against Hunger and the Global Child Nutrition Foundation.

Haiti, Senegal and Malawi to be hosted by Centre for exchange on school feeding

Brasilia- The three delegations, which are each composed of a mixture of ministers, civil servants, technicians and WFP country representatives, will be in Brazil between 10th and 20th of September. For Malawi this will be a follow-up mission, attempting build upon the action plan for establishing a national school feeding programme devised on their first visit to the Centre in March. Their experience will be a concentrated programme based in Brasilia and seek to address some of the implementation challenges that have become apparent since the initial study visit.

The Centre of Excellence to host Ghana for study visit on school feeding programme

The mission, composed of representatives from the ministries of local government, food and agriculture and education as well as members of the WFP Ghana Country Office, will start with a field trip to Natal, Brazil northeast region, followed by an official agenda with Brazilian authorities in Brasilia.

Ghana is in the formative stages of establishing a universal home-grown school feeding programme as part of the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP).

School feeding policies help strengthen cooperation among Latin American countries

The mission, composed of representatives from the Sistema Nacional para el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia (SNDIF), will start with a field trip to Natal, Brazil northeast region, followed by an official agenda with Brazilian authorities in Brasilia.

The delegation will participated in a series of learning sessions, presentations and visit to public schools with the aim of fostering knowledge exchanges around successful policy interventions aimed at reducing food insecurity and tackling extreme poverty via school feeding programmes.

PAA Africa learning component is launched in Brasilia

Brasilia - Under the learning component of the PAA Africa Programme (Purchase from Africans for Africa), the government of Brazil (CGFome and Ministry of Social Development), WFP Centre of Excellence and FAO Brazil – with support from DFID – are organizing the Inception Workshop this week in Brasília and Alagoas State. From 2 to 6 July, consultants and representatives of WFP COs (including P4P), FAO COs, and governments from Ethiopia, Niger, Malawi, Mozambique and Senegal will exchange experiences in food and nutrition security.

South-South Policy Dialogue discusses Agricultural Development in Africa

On May 17th and 18th Brasilia hosted a high-level event on agriculture and development: the International Seminar on The Role of South-South Cooperation in Agricultural Development in Africa. Darana Souza, Programme Officer at the WFP Centre of Excellence against Hunger, was invited to participate as a speaker in the Panel “Brazilian cooperation for development: new paradigm for agriculture development in Africa?”. Darana analysed the Paths for Brazil-Africa Cooperation in Food Security Policy, through the cooperation initiative PAA Africa.

The Centre of Excellence to host Global Forum on Child Nutrition in 2013

Addis Ababa - The largest forum of leading international school feeding experts - 2012 Global Child Nutrition Forum (GCNF) – took place on 15-18 May in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Centre was represented by Daniel Balaban, Cynthia Jones and Christiani Buani. Hosted by the Government of Ethiopia, the event brought together experts from 23 sub Saharan African countries, international organizations, academia and NGOs. They highlighted the actions that countries have taken in stimulating economic development and improving food security through national school feeding programmes.

Rwanda delegation visits School Feeding Programmes in Brazil

The WFP Centre of Excellence against Hunger hosted the visit of a multi-sectoral Rwanda delegation from April 17th to April 26th. The main goal was to learn about the Brazilian experience with school feeding and enhance skills to design and implement a sustainable school feeding programme integrating different sectors/ministries and based on local production.  The mission was composed by the following government officials and WFP staff members:
