Drew Barrymore shot to childhood fame at the age of seven, when she co-starred in the 1982 Steven Spielberg film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. The product of an acting dynasty that includes the legendary John Barrymore, the actress has never looked back after appearing in countless box office hits, including Charlie's Angels, Batman Forever and Scream.
In 2005, Barrymore travelled to Kenya to see first-hand the impact of hunger on the poor, especialy girls and women in urban slums. Marie Claire magazine dedicated a cover story to Barrymore's diary of the visit while, on March 13, her photos, together with other images by photographer Evelyn Hockstein, raised US$18,656 in an auction at the International Centre for Photography. The money guaranteed a free school lunch for almost 100,000 children targeted in WFP's school feeding projects.
"Blessed to be a part of this and humbled in every way. This proves everyone can make a difference," said Barrymore after the auction.
She became a WFP Ambassador Against Hunger in May 2007.
