Logistics and Telecommunication Cluster activities in support of the Government of the Philippines and the Humanitarian community’s response to Tropical Storm Ketsana

About this Operation

Heavy torrential rains on 26 September 2009 from tropical storm Ketsana (“Ondoy”) have resulted in widespread flooding, landslides and population displacements in the Philippines.

The Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GoRP) has declared a state of calamity and all key clusters have been activated to respond to the effects of the storm in the National Capital Region (NCR), Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR), Region I, Region II, Region III, Region IV and Region IV. The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC), lead government agency for the relief response, along with the Humanitarian Country Team, has designated Logistics as an overarching priority to support programmatic Clusters.

Through this Special Operation WFP will in its capacity as Logistics and Emergency Telecommunications Clusters lead, and on behalf of the humanitarian community, support the efforts of the Philippines authorities. The operation provides for the assets, equipment, staff, systems and facilities necessary to ensure:

  • the coordination of and information management for the logistics response.
  • the logistics, operational and telecommunication capability for the humanitarian community to respond to the crisis.
