Malawi - 2005/2006 Biennial Report

Malawi is classified as a least developed country and is currently ranked 166 out of 177 countries on the Human Development Index. More than half the population (52 percent) live below the poverty line and 22 percent are living in ultra poverty (Poverty Vulnerability Analysis Report, 2005). Pervasive risks and high vulnerability to shocks such as drought, floods, price volatility, illness and death – mostly due to HIV/AIDS, are the major causes of poverty in Malawi.
