Mali: More than 700,000 refugees expected from fighting

While French troops and warplanes battle extremists who are moving toward the capital of Mali, the frightened and isolated people of the north can only watch and wait. “Just now there is still food in the markets, but things are getting worse,” says Zlatan Milisic, who heads the World Food Program’s Mali office in the southern capital Bamako. “There are about 1.8 million people living in the affected areas and one-third of them are already food insecure.”
