This operation has been modified and extended in time until 31 August 2010 as per Budget revision 4 (see below).
Mauritania’s food and nutritional insecurity is structural in origin, but has been exacerbated by short-term factors such as inflation in world oil and cereals prices, late arrival of rains and the destruction of sown areas as a consequence of this year’s unprecedented floods.
These factors have reduced the incomes of small farmers and pastoralists, already affected by the consequences of several years of successive droughts and shocks related to a locust invasion.
Protracted relief and recovery operation 10605.0 targets small farmers and pastoralists living in the agro-pastoral zone and aims to improve the nutritional status of children under 5 years of age, pregnant and lactating women and persons with HIV/AIDS receiving anti-retroviral treatment.
There is an additional component for Mauritanian returnees from Senegal within the framework of a voluntary repatriation operation.
The operation will also aim to strengthen the capacities of response mechanisms for emergency situations and those of beneficiary communities to enable them to become self-sufficient. Special attention will be paid to consolidating the achievements in capacity-building of the previous operation (PRRO 10359.0).
