Over the past eight years WFP saw a steady growth in the number of its NGO partners, in particular local partners. In 2006, WFP had nearly tripled the number of NGO partners it had in 1998, including a 332 percent rise in local partners. In total, WFP had 3,255 NGO partners, encompassing 238 international organizations and 3,017 local ones.
The increase in the number of partners was partially triggered by the expansion of WFP and partially by improved data collection. WFP grew considerably from a US$1.24 billion organization in 1998 to a US$3 billion organization in 2006. Consequently, this demanded a rapid increase in the number of NGO partners to implement and complement WFP projects.
