World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

DHAKA – More than 100 guests, including representatives from the Government, Embassies, NGOs and Civil Society, the UN, and media came together at the Sonargaon Hotel yesterday for the launch of a joint research initiative comparing the income, food security and nutrition outcomes of different kinds of Safety Net transfer by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the World Food Programme (WFP). The event was hosted by the Disaster Management and Relief Division, Ministry of Food and Disaster Management.

DHAKA – The Government of Brazil has confirmed a contribution to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) of 7,000 metric tons of rice, valued at US$3.3 million, for people living in the most disaster-prone areas of Bangladesh.

DHAKA – The Government of Japan has today handed over a vital food donation to the people of Bangladesh that will be used to help 400,000 vulnerable Bangladeshis be better prepared to deal with the impact of natural disasters and climate change. DHAKA – WFP is rolling out a new programme to support undernourished women and children in Cox’s Bazar district, where almost 20 percent of children under the age of  five are  undernourished.

A new assessment of food needs in flood-affected Satkhira district shows that more than 150,000 people will require food and other assistance over the next 12 months. The report, published by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the  Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), indicates that flooding in July has caused prolonged displacement, crop damage and food insecurity.

DHAKA -- Six members from the Executive Board of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP http://www.wfp.org) will arrive on a six-day official visit to Bangladesh on Sunday. While in the country, the Board members will visit WFP field operations and meet with ultra poor and food-insecure families to see how food and cash assistance has helped in building their skills and assets.
