World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

The online quiz game Freerice crossed another milestone today with the addition of its one millionth registered player. The game, which allows players to raise rice for the hungry with every correct answer, has provided meals to almost 5 million people since launching in 2007.

WFP and KONAMI Digital Entertainment have teamed up to create an online game with a real-world impact. Food Force puts players at the helm of the world’s largest humanitarian aid agency. Before Dora was diagnosed with HIV, she had never even heard of the disease. But she quickly learned about its effects on herself and on ability to care for her children. Now, with WFP’s food and nutrition support, she is stronger, healthier and better able to provide for herself and her family.

Almost a year ago, WFP started a project aimed at assisting some 650 people living with HIV who were receiving antiretroviral treatment and were identified as highly food insecure. Every month, while receiving their medical treatment at the health center, these people also receive a family food basket made up of rice, soy grains, salt and vegetable oil.

A dairy processing plant set up with EU funding in the Bolivian highlands is helping fight hunger and malnutrition in two ways. By supplying cheese and yoghurt to local schools, it helps keep local kids well nourished. But it also means the farmers who run the plant are now economically better off, and therefore more 'food secure'.

Eugenia, 42, used to have a thriving chicken farm, before it was washed away by a wave of flash floods in eastern Bolivia. Afterwards, she feared that her family would have to eat their few remaining chickens to survive. But thanks to emergency food assistance, she’ll be able to keep her chickens and raise more as she rebuilds her farm.

A highly nutritious baby-food made from dried llama meat and other traditional ingredients is providing a locally-produced response to rampant child malnutrition in the Bolivian Andes. Named Kallpawawa, the Quecha word for “super food,” the product has also given the area a much needed economic boost.

A long dry spell in the El Chaco region of southern Bolivia has decimated maize harvests, threatening an entire culture of indigenous corn growers with destitution. As thousands sell their land and move to the cities, WFP is helping to make staying on their farms a real option.

WFP has long provided food for school meals projects around the world, convinced of their importance in fighting hunger. But in an ideal world the food would come not from WFP but from local producers. In Bolivia this is starting to happen.
