WFP Assists Malian Refugees and Host Communities in Burkina Faso

The influx of over 32,000 Malian refugees has made an already fragile situation in Burkina Faso worse. Their arrival has put pressure on arid regions, where access to water and food is always difficult.

Overview

With a population of 14 million (as per Census 2006 data), of whom 43.9 % lives below the poverty line, and almost half is under 15, Burkina Faso is classified as both a least developed country and a low-income, food-deficit country. The UNDP 2010 Human Development Report ranked Burkina Faso 161th out of 169 countries.
