WFP’s emergency operation provides monthly food rations to 115,000 Congolese who have fled fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

WFP Republic of Congo also targets over 200,000 people with food assistance. Half those receiving food assistance through this operation are children in schools. School attendance rates have jumped from 50 percent to 90 percent in schools receiving WFP assistance.

WFP is currently implementing both relief and recovery operations in the Republic of Congo to improve food security and the socio-economic conditions of people affected by armed conflict and poverty. The main objectives are to:

Improve food security and enhance resilience to shocks for refugee populations in Northern Congo.

Support improved nutrition and health status of children and people living with HIV/AIDS and/or TB through school feeding programs in school and supplementary programmes in health centres in collaboration with UNICEF and WHO.

Increase attendance in WFP-assisted schools, particularly by girls.
