One of the affected communities was Cuilapa, Santa Rosa, which is 55 kilometers from the capital. Damage to this house made it uninhabitable, but the dog in this picture keeps protecting the property of his owners.

Any place is safer than remaining at home, because of aftershocks. This is the case of families with young children, who have taken refuge in this truck.

"Santa Rosa still shakes and the rain aggravates the situation due to the accumulation of water in the hills that can cause landslides and mudslides," said Irma Palma, WFP Officer in Charge.

Those affected try to cover from the rain and thick fog, but the soil is wet as result of the continuous rains.

After four earthquakes this week, WFP sent food rations to more than 1,500 persons located in eight temporary shelters in the municipalities of Cuilapa and Pueblo Nuevo Viñas. If earthquakes continue, the amount of affected people could double or multiplicate.

Food rations distributed to affected families include maize, beans and vegetable oil and should last for ten days.

But the fear of further aftershocks is still present. Many houses have been so affected that families prefer to remain outside.

In addition to ongoing tremors, the most affected families are always the ones with less resources and the poorest," said Lida Escobar, WFP Field Monitor who is currently in the affected area.
