World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

Two years after the earthquake, many Haitian schools are serving their children with food grown locally. Knowing they have a buyer, farmers are motivated to produce more food. Knowing they'll get good food, kids are keen to go to school - where they get the nutrition they need, plus an education. It's the virtuous circle at the heart of the strategy by the government and WFP to make Haitians more food secure.

Haiti has spent two years rebuilding. In testing times, the people of this country have managed to partly erase the scars of the January 2010 earthquake. Above all, Haitians are now seeking stability. They are looking for a permanent roof, jobs, education and enough food to properly feed their families. But as the country is slowly recovering, many Haitians continue to struggle to have enough to eat.

When two-year-old Michael started treatment for severe malnutrition, he was so weak that his mother thought he would die. But, with the help of the highly nutritious food products provided by UNICEF and WFP, he's now on the mend. Fighting malnutrition is one of the ways WFP and its partners are helping Haiti move forward two years after the devastating 2010 earthquake.

The online quiz game Freerice crossed another milestone today with the addition of its one millionth registered player. The game, which allows players to raise rice for the hungry with every correct answer, has provided meals to almost 5 million people since launching in 2007.

Almost two years after a devastating earthquake hit Haiti, WFP Ambassador Against Hunger George Stroumboulopoulos went to the Caribbean island to see how the nation was faring. WFP's Stephanie Tremblay took the Canadian journalist to a camp near Port au Prince where WFP and its partners are helping to fight malnutrition among some of those made homeless by the disaster.

On October 3rd, the first day of the new school year, the streets of the country were once again filled with something very familiar in Haiti: students walking to school in their uniforms.

Torbeck is located in the South of Haiti, about 4 hours away from the capital. Here, in the valley, you might be led to think that everybody is growing rice. This is not far from the truth. Fields are everywhere and rice is one of the main crops grown by local farmers.

Haitians have not dubbed the country’s North West department the Far West for no reason. The region feels very far away. Driving the 300 km or so that separate the capital from the North West is a little bit like travelling back in time. Along the way, pavement is replaced by bumpy dirt roads, access to electricity becomes scarce or non-existent. Even the houses, usually built with cement blocks are replaced in the most part by mud huts.
