Madagascar Facts and Figures June 2011

In Madagascar, over three quarters of the population live under the national poverty line. In the last four decades, over 50 natural disasters have impacted the country. While the east is affected by cyclones and floods, the southern part of the country suffers from recurrent droughts. The increasing fragility of the entire ecosystems, deforestation and poor land management practices are major causes of vulnerability to shocks and related food insecurity.
