A severe drought is affecting much of Central America. At the request of the Government of Nicaragua, WFP is providing urgent food relief to rural families affected by the lack of rainfall. The resources of this operation were part of contributions made by Canada, Brazil and Australia.

World Humanitarian Day is celebrated on August 19th around the world. It was on this day in 2003, 22 aid workers were killed in a bombing at the UN headquarters in Baghdad. On World Humanitarian Day we remember those who have lost their lives in humanitarian service and pay tribute to those that are making a difference through their hard work and sacrifice. The Municipality of Jalapa is one of the largest producers of staple grains in the country. A statue of Xilomen, the indigenous Goddess of Maize, stands tall and receives visitors in a park within the city centre, which is located 70 kilometres North East of Ocotal, in the Department of Nueva Segovia. But a local producer is growing another type of staple food. After tasting dates donated by Saudi Arabia to the Nicaraguan School Feeding Programme, Alejandro Aguirre planted two date seeds at home. He was surprised with the results.

The Executive Secretariat of the National System for Disaster Prevention, Mitigation and Relief (SINAPRED), Nicaragua’s Civil Defense, with support from the World Food Programme (WFP), organized a Risk Management Course to better instruct 94 technicians from the government municipalities of Madriz, Esteli, Nueva Segovia and Boaco, Rio San Juan, and the Caribbean Coast.

The World Food Programme (WFP) and the National System for Disaster Prevention, Mitigation and Relief (SINAPRED), Nicaragua’s Civil Defence, have joined forces to build a warehouse to store food and other essential inputs as a precautionary measure to be ready to assist in the event of an emergency.
