A massive feeding campaign in drought-stricken Niger is under way. It started in a small village east of the capital. Amont these who came to receive food rations for their families were Hadiza, a mother of four, and Shaibou, a grandfather of 50. For both the food was a life-saver. View video

Nowhere are the scars of drought in Niger deeper than in the pastoral Diffa region, where the bodies of sheep, cattle and even camels bare grim testimony to the hardships facing local herders. Their flocks dwindling and food prices rising, these families are among nearly 8 million people WFP plans to feed this year.

WFP is building its expanded operation in Niger around the need to reach malnourished under twos in the areas worst hit by the recent drought. Getting special nutritious food to these million children is part of a general scale-up which aims to feed 8 million people over the next six months.

As the food security situation worsens in the Eastern Sahel region, WFP is stepping up its interventions in Niger to meet the needs of more than two million hungry people. WFP is planning, for the period from May to October, to provide food for an estimated 2.3 million people under a Protracted Relief and Recovery Operation, said WFP’s West Africa Regional Bureau Director Thomas Yanga.
