WFP Launches Targeted Food Distributions in Senegal

At the end of April, WFP launched its food assistance activities in Oukout in the Ziguinchor region of Senegal. In total, WFP aims to assist over 800,000 people in Senegal this year as part of its response to the food crisis in the Sahel region.

Overview

Although it is one of the region’s more stable countries, Senegal remains a low-income, food-deficit nation with an estimated population of 12.9 million. In the 2010 UNDP Human Development Index, Senegal ranks 144th out of 169 countries.
