With conflict continuing in South Sudan, WFP's Executive Director Ertharin Cousin and UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres are calling on the international community to step up their humanitarian response. The two UN agency heads spoke with refugees, government officials and humanitarian workers during a visit last week to Ethiopia, which is registering one of the highest numbers of South Sudanese refugees.

Ertharin Cousin, the Executive Director of the World Food Programme, has just finished a three-day visit to South Sudan and Ethiopia, where she traveled alongside the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to see first-hand the devastating impact of the South Sudan crisis. In her latest blog, the WFP chief talks about meeting people in the town of Nyal who have fled a deadly combination of violence and hunger.

The ongoing conflict in South Sudan is uprooting families and paralysing the food markets they depend on. Among the thousands forced to flee their homes is Elizabeth Nyanchuit, who trekked for 10 hours with her children and neighbours to find safety. She is now living in a hut made of reeds in Ganyiel, a rural community in the country's northern Unity State.

Tens of thousands of refugees from South Sudan are pouring into Ethiopia, fleeing the fighting in their homeland. By the end of the year, officials say Ethiopia could be hosting some 150,000 South Sudanese refugees. WFP is distributing food rations to refugees in camps and border crossings, along with special, nutrient-packed foods for the most vulnerable. But the sheer numbers of new arrivals are straining the resources of the humanitarian community.

The crisis in South Sudan has forced more than 700,000 people to flee their homes in search of safety. The UN World Food Programme has so far provided food assistance for around 250,000 displaced people, and is working to extend more assistance to people we can reach outside UN peacekeeping bases, including those who are returning to devastated towns like Bentiu in Unity State.

The dream of independence in the new country of South Sudan was shattered with the outbreak of fierce fighting in mid-December 2013. Tens of thousands of people fled to safety in neighbouring countries, particularly Uganda. WFP is providing food for the newly arriving refugees – people like Nyanwuor, a pregnant woman with three young children who tells her story below.

Hundreds of thousands of South Sudanese have been displaced by conflict since mid-December. Now, as each side accuses the other of violating an agreement to cease hostilities and political negotiations continue, most of the displaced are still too frightened to return home. Meanwhile, several WFP warehouses and offices have been looted and damaged, with the loss of thousands of tons of badly needed food. Despite this, WFP is assisting a growing number of people every day.

Since the outbreak of conflict in South Sudan in mid-December last year, Kakuma has received about 13,000 refugees. An average of 300 refugees daily, mostly women and children, are being received at the camp. WFP is providing food assistance to the refugees at the border upon arrival and also at the refugee camp.

WFP has launched a major emergency operation to get food to the hundreds of thousands of people fleeing fighting in the world's newest country. Insecurity means that getting food to the hungry is tricky but still, since fighting erupted, WFP has reached 178,000 people. WFP's Challiss McDonough reports from the South Sudan capital Juba.
