WFP Activities

In 2013, WFP plans to provide food and nutrition assistance to more than 2.8 million people, including food insecure rural families, vulnerable children, internally displaced people (IDPs), Sudanese refugees and returnees across South Sudan. This will require about 224,000 metric tons of food of various kinds.

WFP is also committed to addressing the root causes of hunger, including through support for infrastructure projects that help the most food-insecure communities enhance their livelihoods and prepare themselves better to cope with disasters such as floods. In 2013, WFP plans to reach more than 1 million people through activities in which communities build assets for themselves and those who work on the project receive food for their families.

WFP plans to introduce cash-for-assets in 2013 for up to 100,000 food-insecure but physically-able residents to build much-needed community assets in urban and peri-urban areas.

Through its school meals activities, WFP is helping hundreds of thousands of South Sudanese students stay in school and build a brighter future. WFP plans to provide daily school meals to 424,000 pupils in 2013, and to provide a monthly take-home ration of cereals and vegetable oil to an additional 40,000 girls.

To respond to a high prevalence of acute malnutrition (wasting) WFP plans to provide specialised supplementary food to about 618,000 children, pregnant women and nursing mothers. These programmes, known as blanket and targeted supplementary feeding, will support both South Sudanese residents and refugees.

WFP is helping 3,000 smallholder farmers through its Purchase for Progress (P4P) initiative to improve the quality and quantity of their agricultural produce and help them access markets by training them on post-harvest handling of grains and warehouse management.

WFP is working with the Government of South Sudan to construct and open more than 500 kilometres of feeder roads to link remote, agriculturally productive areas to main roads and markets.
