The continuing crisis in Syria has left countless people homeless and jobless. As the conflict grinds on, many families move from one place to another, seeking safety and a way to support themselves. Aziz’s family, which is from Aleppo, has migrated across Syria, then into Iraq and then back again to Syria.

Simon Hacker, a Canadian national, works as a Logistics Officer for WFP in Syria. Based in Damascus, Simon is responsible for dispatching emergency food supplies for 150,000 people per day throughout the war-torn country. Here, in his diary, Simon describes a typical day in his life as he and his team attempt to proovide food assistance for 4 million Syrians each month.

Thousands of Syrians continue to move from one place to another seeking nothing but safety for themselves and their loved ones. Many of them are left homeless, jobless and in fear of losing even their hope for a peaceful future. Amal is a mother of two who found herself on the run for the second time but this time without her husband whom she was separated from in Adra Al Omaleya that had been their home for the past 18 months.

When conflict spread to the northern Syrian province of Aleppo last winter, it destroyed almost everything in its path -- including the rural town where Zakiya’s home once stood. Zakiya has been on the move ever since, constantly running from a conflict that keeps finding her. Early this month she had to move again.

DAMASCUS – WFP is expanding its emergency operation to provide food assistance to over 7 million Syrians who have fled the conflict and are now displaced inside their country or living in neighbouring countries. Recent assessments show that almost half the population inside Syria is food insecure and close to 6.3 million people urgently need food assistance.

In Saboura, WFP food assistance reaches beneficiaries at their doorsteps. The majority of internally displaced people in this village that sits 800 metres above sea level come from the besieged town of Moadamiyeh where food, water and fuel have almost run out.

WFP has begun providing Syrian refugees in Lebanon with electronic vouchers they can use to buy food at local shops. Launched in partnership with MasterCard, the programme will help over 800,000 Syrians meet their food needs while giving a boost to the local economy.

The mountain village of Ma’aloula is famous as being one of the few places where the ancient language of Aramaic is still spoken. In Aramaic its name means “entrance”. But that name seems sadly inappropriate now, as fierce fighting in the area has made it the scene of an “exodus” by its few thousand inhabitants. WFP is assisting many of them on the outskirts of Damascus.
