The First Lady and Karamoja state minister, Janet Museveni, has appealed to the World Food Programme (WFP) to support large scale agriculture in Karamoja.
She said this would reduce the region’s reliance on food relief.
Mrs. Museveni made the call on Tuesday at a meeting with Sheila Sisulu, the WFP deputy head for hunger solutions based in Italy.
A State House statement said the Fist Lady informed Sisulu that the Government had initiated large scale agricultural programmes in the region, but the produce had been affected by low rains.

The education ministry is negotiating with the World Food Programme how to feed children under the Universal Primary Education (UPE) programme. Education minister Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire said talks were underway to come up with a policy on mid-day meals in schools.

The situation he refers to is the severe food shortages being experienced in this Teso region of Uganda. (..) The district chairman of Soroti, Stephen Ochola, said the entire district was affected by the food crisis, including Serere and Kasilo counties, which grow a lot of food. Although Soroti had not received any food relief, Ochola hoped for help from the central government and agencies like the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Soroti Catholic Diocese Integrated Development Organisation (SOCADIDO). Earlier this month, the WFP, the Catholic development organisation and the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) carried out a rapid assessment of the region's food situation and their report was expected by last week.

Japan has committed $5.6 (about sh11.2b) to the World Food Programme (WFP) for emergency food relief in Uganda. Tetsuo Seki, the chief representative of the Japanese International Cooperation, said on Monday the donation was part of the $48m that the government of Japan was donating to the World Food Programme operations in eight countries. (..) WFP Uganda director Stanlake Samkange, signed on behalf of the WFP.

A UN expert on human rights of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) on Friday called for more humanitarian aid to the war-torn northern Uganda where famine is ravaging the region. (..) The UN World Food Program and other humanitarian agencies started scaling down their food distribution to the region following the return of peace after over 20 years of conflict and the resettlement of some IDPs back to their home areas.

(..) “Since January, WFP has bought maize grain and maize meal worth nearly $19m, beans worth over $3.5m and enriched blended food for children valued at more than $3.8m,” Samkange said.

The World Food Programme (WFP) has delivered 52 tonnes of relief food to residents of Maddu and Kabulasoke sub-counties in Mpigi district. Disaster preparedness state minister Musa Ecweru on Monday handed over the food to the local leaders, led by the area MP, Rosemary Najjemba (NRM).

The Warehouse Receipt System, meant to create market and credit opportunities for agricultural products is gaining popularity among farmers which could transform agricultural marketing processes. (..) So far, the World Food Programme is the biggest customer of the WRC system. According to Mr Moses Byakagaba, general manager of MASSGA, they have managed to mobilize about 75 tonnes of maize from over 200 farmers.

Famine has started claiming lives in various parts of the country. (..) "The Government is aware of the magnitude of the problem. All parts of the country facing food shortage will be served," Kabwegyere promised. The minister said the World Food Programme would also provide food aid.
