The World Food Programme has said it has invested up to $14 million (about Shs31 billion) this year to fund nutrition programmes in Uganda. (..) “Food security and proper nutrition are closely linked,” Mr Stanlake Samkange, the WFP country drector, said yesterday. “WFP’s traditional emergency support to disaster-affected populations, combining nutrition with agriculture is a key part of WFP’s efforts to help the government eradicate hunger.”

The Japanese government has donated about Shs10 billion towards emergency and livelihood programmes in the Karamoja region. The funds to be channeled through the World Food Programme (WFP), will see about Shs6 billion go towards emergency activities in response to drought in the region and about Shs3 billion to the Karamoja productive assets programme.

STAKEHOLDERS in the grain industry have expressed concern about the limited warehouses in the country. (..) The country manager reported that the World Food Programme had promised to construct warehouses in some parts of the country to facilitate the grain storage systems.

The US government has offered $4.8m (about Shs10b) to buy relief food for people in Karamoja sub-region. The money is being delivered to the UN World Food Programme and will be used to buy food for people threatened by hunger in Kotido, Kaabong, Moroto, Nakapiripirit and Abim districts.

More than 60,000 people fled clashes between the Congolese army and Ugandan rebels this month, hampering efforts by the United Nations and Congo to relocate 2.3 million displaced by conflict in the Central African nation. (..) The World Food Programme will provide $400 million over the next two years to fund programs including helping people return to their homes and those who are still displaced, WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran said in Nyanzale on July 23.

The First Lady and Karamoja affairs state minister, Mrs. Janet Museveni, on Sunday held a meeting with the World Food Programme (WFP) boss, Josette Sheeran, at the Speke Resort Munyonyo. (..) Sheeran, who is based in Italy, was in Uganda to attend the 15th summit of the African Union and to tour the projects being implemented by the WFP in Uganda to ensure food security and value-addition.

The bombings in Uganda that left 74 people dead signaled that Somali Islamists are carrying their three-year fight for power to the rest of East Africa (..).Peacekeepers are in Somalia to help stabilize the country and end one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. After the Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency ended two years ago, local authorities advised Hellen Apaku to plant maize on her one-acre land, saying she would get rich. (..) Prices for flour have also dropped. For example, class one flour costs between sh1,000 to sh1,400 in most city retail outlets, down from between sh2,000 to sh2,500 last year. The main maize markets for Uganda include Sudan and the World Food Programme.

The UN's World Food Programme (WFP) has begun installing cleaning and drying equipment in nine public warehouses. The project, which is valued at $2.4m (about sh5b), targets warehouses that use the Warehouse Receipt System (WRS). (..) "The exercise started in Gulu and is ongoing in other parts of the country" said WFP country director Stanlake Samkange.

THE World Food Programme (WFP) will construct five warehouses with capacity to store 300 metric tonnes each in Parabong, Patongo, Omot, Awere and Pajule in Pader district, reports Chris Ocowun. The UN relief food agency will also install a maize cleaning and drying equipment in a 6,000-metric tonne capacity warehouse in Gulu town.
