Spain is doubling its 2009 contribution to WFP to support the agency’s efforts to provide urgent food assistance to 20 million people in the Horn of Africa, where erratic rains, conflict and stubbornly high food prices have produced a prolonged hunger crisis.

This has been a tough year for formerly displaced Ugandans trying to rebuild their lives in their northern homeland. Helen Oyela and her family are already facing drought and soaring food prices. A cut in WFP food aid because of a funding crunch has made matters worse.

Some 16,000 residents of the dry Karamoja region are learning to cultivate cassava, a drought-resistent crop that can help the area overcome its longstanding hunger problems. It's one of the ways WFP and its sister UN agency FAO are promoting long-term 'food security'.

When massive floods swept across Africa in September, WFP launched an unprecendented series of airdrops in Uganda to reach people who had been cut off. WFP spokesperson for Uganda Lydia Wamala reports on the displaced people who were already living in camps and who received another blow to re-starting their lives.

WFP has welcomed US government contributions in September totaling US$110.7 million for the hungry poor in 11 countries from Latin America to Asia. Nearly half the resources were targeted to Sudan, home to WFP’s single-largest operation in the world.
