World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

Cholera patient in treatment centre There is no end in sight to the cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe, which has already claimed over 3,500 lives and infected tens of thousands more.

Cooking maize meal Along with necessary medical care, thousands of patients and their caregivers in treatment centres across the country are now benefiting from WFP food. Cooked onsite, the meals consist of the staple maize porridge and beans.

Mother feeding baby cholera patient Food alone is not enough. But it is an important ingredient in the fight against the disease, especially in areas like Mt Darwin where hunger and malnutrition are rife.

Zimbabwe Doctor Flipcam Interview “Food assistance is of great importance because it means a quicker recovery,” says the District Medical Officer, Dr. George Mapiya. He also believes that the WFP food provided to the caregivers helps to motivate them to continue their difficult work.

Recovered patients eating before being discharged Healthy again, these lucky survivors enjoy one more WFP meal before heading home. But everyone knows that the next rains will bring another flood of patients. The international response has saved many lives but the crisis is very far from over.
