This monthly bulletin is published based on market data from different sources and aims to alert on latest developments. Based on consumption patterns in Afghanistan, it includes data of wheat and wheat flour; Terms of Trade between daily casual labor wage and wheat (Kg) as well as ToT for one year live female sheep and wheat (Kg). Coverage is currently given to nine main cities.
The bulletin is followed later in the month by a supplement containing additional data received during the month. This supplement includes wheat price from 34 provinces (Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock –MAIL-), wheat flour price from seven border markets (WFP and MAIL) and Consumer Price Index (Central Statistics Organization) for six main cities.

The Global Food Security Update provides an overview of the food security trends in 57 countries in six regions and offers an outlook for the 3-6 months following its release. It is based on food security monitoring reports, updates from WFP’s regional and country-based Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping (VAM) units and a review of secondary information.

In many countries of the region winter wheat is cultivated in irrigated conditions. Thus, remote sensing data are expected to provide more reliable information about crop status than analysis of meteorological parameters. Analysis of NDVI confirms that vegetation status at the end of the season 2007/2008 within the winter wheat zones was worse than normal in many countries (red color is a dominant at the map
below). The situation was close to normal in Caucasus countries and slightly better than normal in southern and central Afghanistan (where winter crop is scarce).
