WFP is facing increasing difficulties in providing food assistance to Sahrawi refugees living in remote camps near Tindouf in southwest Algeria – a concern also shared by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

As the media and the humanitarian community focus on the spreading drought in the Horn of Africa, WFP is deeply concerned that more attention is needed to highlight the persistent problems faced by the world’s refugees – most of them in Africa.

WFP will begin assisting 60,000 Sahrawi refugees living in the desert area near Tindouf who saw their homes and belongings washed away by three-days of rare torrential rains.

With a contribution of a 4 million euros from the European Commission Humanitarian Office (ECHO) for Pakistan, the European Commission (EC) provides its largest contribution since 1992 – some 214 million euros - to WFP operations around the globe in its effort to save lives and feed the hungry poor.

WFP welcomes a US$3.3 million contribution from the European Commission Humanitarian Aid department to its operation in Algeria which currently assists 90,000 Western Saharan refugees.
