Overview
Although Armenia had a good wheat harvest for the second consecutive year, it remains highly dependent on imports from drought-affected Russia and Ukraine to meet its domestic food needs.
Rising wheat flour prices are currently reducing the purchasing power of the poor, who account for one-third of the population and spend more than half of their income on food. The average price of wheat flour in September is 25% higher than a year ago; the price of bread has been steadily increasing since June. In October, the food component of the CPI increased by 2.1 per cent from September.
