Around 67 percent ultra poor people, who take micro-credit from different NGOs, spend their money for non-productive purposes, which ultimately do not help reduce their poverty, according to a survey released yesterday. The World Food Programme (WFP) conducted the survey on different households in Bogra, Sirajganj and Pabna districts. “We find this trend very worrying. It won't help them get out of poverty,” said Michiel Meerdink, who presented the survey titled “Access to Credit” at an annual review workshop of Food Security for Ultra Poor (FSUP) at the Spectra Convention Centre in the capital.

Most of the plans and recommendations for ensuring food security were not fully implemented due to lack of genuine political commitment, institutional mechanisms and involvement of the people, experts observed. (..) Kenro Oshidari of the World Food Programme said that such piecemeal approach for ensuring food security did not work as the key problem in safety-net programmes was in the selection of beneficiaries at local levels. ‘Many of the elderly people in urban areas are not properly covered under rice-based food security,’ he said.

The government of Japan has donated 27,465 tonnes of wheat to Bangladesh to help stiffen relief infrastructure in a nation vulnerable to natural disasters, the Japanese embassy said on Monday. "The food assistance will be provided through the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to assist 300,000 ultra-poor people of the country to reduce disaster risk through building community infrastructure," it said.

"There are 60m people here who are hungry , that's about the population of the UK. Most of the kids at this school come from slum areas and will at best eat one meal a day," he said.

With the fund support from World Food Program (WFP), one local NGO named Eco-Social Development Organization (ESDO) is implementing a project to build a flood shelter in the union to provide shelter to the homeless people when flood comes. (..) WFP provided 32,000 U.S. dollars and 90 tons of rice for the project. The people who are building the shelter are happy with the project.

A team of obstetricians, general practitioners and midwives visit the camps for those displaced by civil strife in Timor-Leste daily to provide antenatal care, including tetanus vaccinations and supplementary food provided by the World Food Programme.

Jasmin, a poor nursing woman living in Bangladesh's Gaibandha district, 268 km northwest of capital Dhaka, is leading a healthy and better life with the support of the WFP Community Nutrition program. Community Nutrition program started in 2007, covering three groups of malnourished people in high food insecure rural areas which include pregnant and nursing women, children from 6 months to 24 months, adolescent girls from 12-17 years old. The program helps to improve their nutrition and health.
