Marginalised women in Bangladesh are receiving food and a sense of empowerment thanks to a programme run by WFP and the government of Bangladesh. Alongside monthly wheat flour rations, it offers business training and teaches participants about their rights.

For more than 40 years, WFP has been helping people whose lives depend on the vagaries of the weather. For these people, nature is both a friend and a foe. If it brings just enough rain, then crops will thrive and families will be fed. Too much rain - or too little - and disaster strikes.

WFP is funded entirely through voluntary contributions, most of which come from governments. When we calculated the cost of feeding 108 million hungry people in 74 countries in 2009, we set a budget of US$6.7 billion. Taking into account forecasts and money already received, we now expect to end the year with US$3.7 billion.

Asma recently took part in WFP food-for-training course on disaster preparedness, which helped her to assess and reduce disaster risks, as well as acquire skills that will enable her to generate her own income. Her house is now safe from floods and she can concentare on her new cow rearing business.

The England cricket team is using the international Twenty/20 tournament in England this summer to raise awareness about hunger. It's the latest initiative in an ongoing 'Cricket Against Hunger' partnership with WFP. Watch video

KFC and Pizza Hut have launched the World Hunger Relief Campaign jointly with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to raise wider awareness on hunger and support WFP to provide meals to children in schools, helping to ensure they complete basic education – one of the most critical steps necessary to overcome poverty and hunger.
