Overview
The rising waters of the Niger River in August have caused severe flooding and affected the populations of the northern regions of Karimama and Malanville. A joint assessment reported that since 22 September, flooding has affected some 50,000 people.
The WFP comprehensive food security and vulnerability analysis conducted in 2008 estimated that nearly one million people in Benin (12% of the population) are food-insecure. The regions of Zou, Atacora and Plateaux show the highest levels of severe chronic malnutrition for children under the age of five years old (around 15%).
