ROME/VATICAN CITY – His Holiness Pope Francis this morning granted a private audience to Ertharin Cousin, Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). The meeting took place immediately upon Cousin’s return from Syria and following her recent visit to Israel and Palestine.

Seedings, defences, gardens and nutrition training have shown the close relationship between disaster risk reduction and food security for more than 600 settler families in 11 communities in the municipality of San Julián in Santa Cruz. These communities, highland and valley cultural enclaves in the middle of the eastern plain, are participating in the modality “Food Vouchers.”

In the community of San Juan de Mocoví, some 150 kilometres from the city of Trinidad, in Bolivia, the United Nations is making a difference in the lives of 25 indigenous families. This zone, prone to flooding and other natural disasters, benefits from resources of the UN Trust Fund for Human Security (UNHSTF) implemented by three agencies: WFP, FAO and UNICEF.

The work days and efforts are rewarded with coupons that the farmers’ families will swap for food in grocery stores in the cities of San Julian and Montero, in the department of Santa Cruz.

For Carmela Roa and her family, WFP food means bringing back life after heavy floods in the Paraguayan Chaco. The food arrived in a precise moment when all of their reserves had perished with the water. The food has given them strength to survive and, for now, vitality to continue the recuperation stage.

A delegation of ambassadors and representatives of the international cooperation reached El Espinillo, in the Paraguayan Chaco, to see firsthand the hardships that the indigenous people went through during this year’s floods and what their needs are more than six months after the disaster. While their situation remains dramatic, the humanitarian response has brought hope for the future.

A group of 300 Bolivian beekeepers, among 1,000 ecological producers, celebrate the inauguration of a fridge that will allow them to preserve their products, guaranteeing its sale in a near future and generate income for their families. This project receives the support of the Millennium Development Goals Achievement Fund (MDG-F).

Since she was a little girl, Basilia already knew about orchards. Her mother died when she was eight years old, meaning she had to leave school to take care of the orchards and the care and feeding of her little brothers alongside her father. Today, a WFP cash and vouchers programme, financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), teaches Basilia and other women new techniques to cultivate orchards. The result is a better nutrition for their families.

First it was the drought. Then the unusual heavy rains and floods washed away Cristina Garcia and her family's belongings, livelihoods and food. Two months later, she and her family were on the verge of leaving their small shack and plot, and move with their children to a nearby farm to work (including the children) so they could eat. Just in time WFP and the Government of Paraguay began food distributions in their community.

Education is the surest route to a better life for kids in the Bolivian highlands, one of the poorest regions in South America, where staying in school is easier said than done. Nutritious meals provided by WFP not only help to keep kids in class, but give them the nutrition they need to grow and learn.
