Hundreds of newly constructed gardens are producing nutritious fruit and vegetables for families and communities in the Santa Cruz area of eastern Bolivia. Managed by the families and communities themselves, the gardens were built as part of a pilot project that WFP supported with food vouchers, allowing the recipients to concentrate on their futures rather than their immediate food needs.

WFP is implementing an innovative and sustainable School Feeding management model that also supports the local economy. Thanks to this model, which places the school and the school meals at the center, the local community is receiving benefits. The key actors are the municipal authorities, the small farmers associations, parents, teachers, school children and WFP staff.

El Gran Chaco is a semi-arid hot and low land region that covers parts of Bolivia, Argentina and Paraguay. In Paraguay, unusual torrential rains destroyed crops, affecting thousands of families, mostly indigenous and farmers. Then an intense drought brought more hardship for the “Chaqueños” (El Chaco’s people). Thirteen-year-old Angel Campuzano shows how WFP food assistance can help and lead entire communities to the path of recovery.

Gaining access to out-of-reach communities is one of the most challenging parts of the job, says WFP field monitor Enoc Solis. After spending years as a dedicated volunteer for WFP, Enoc now monitors food aid deliveries throughout Bolivia. Enoc tells us about some of his most exciting experiences while working for WFP.

The WFP Deputy Regional Director and Officer in Charge, Alzira Ferreira, and the Regional Director of Plan in the Americas, Roland Angerer, signed an agreement to work together to fight food insecurity to help the most vulnerable populations, especially women and children, in Latin America and the Caribbean.

They came to Bolivia to visit schools supported by Truvia, but Abby Heidemann and Matthew Jacobs also sat in class and played soccer during recess, which brought memories of their school days. Before arriving at the school, they took a dirt road which leads to Kalasamana, in the municipality of Poroma, but it was blocked by a landslide. Unable to drive through, the two had to walk a couple of miles, as children do every day, in order to reach their destination.

Seedings, defences, gardens and nutrition training have shown the close relationship between disaster risk reduction and food security for more than 600 settler families in 11 communities in the municipality of San Julián in Santa Cruz. These communities, highland and valley cultural enclaves in the middle of the eastern plain, are participating in the modality “Food Vouchers.”

In the community of San Juan de Mocoví, some 150 kilometres from the city of Trinidad, in Bolivia, the United Nations is making a difference in the lives of 25 indigenous families. This zone, prone to flooding and other natural disasters, benefits from resources of the UN Trust Fund for Human Security (UNHSTF) implemented by three agencies: WFP, FAO and UNICEF.
