Through the Family Meal initiative, a project developed by the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), photographer Chris Terry travelled around the world in search of the ingredients of the family meal. His journey took him to Ecuador’s northern border region, where he met eleven-year-old Ximena and her family shortly after they fled the armed conflict in Colombia and moved to Ecuador.

Women living in the canton of Pimampiro north of Quito are taking action. After attempting to sell food grown in their home gardens, they soon saw that there existed few formal market opportunities in their communities and realized that they faced many challenges. The following article tells the story of a group of organized and united women farmers who created a space for themselves in their local market and who now provide food for WFP’s assistance programmes.

Jazmin is a Colombian refugee in the Ecuadorian northern border receiving WFP assistance. Her story is part of the exhibit “Family Meal: What brings us together”. The exhibit, displayed in several European cities, shows the impact of WFP’s work with funding from the European Commission’s Department for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection of the European Commission (ECHO) on families around the world.

On October 19, the UN celebrated Rural Women’s Day and World Food Day by organizing an event with healthy activities for families at El Ejido Park in Quito. The event was held by WFP and local, national, and international partners, as well as smallholder women farmers from rural areas of Ecuador who have formed associations to work together, reduce costs, and improve access to markets. At the event, information regarding rural women, their importance in agricultural production, and the ways in which people in cities can support them, such as purchasing their fresh and healthy products, was shared with the public.

Rural Ecuadorian women are saddled with domestic duties, in addition to the responsibilities of tending agriculture and living a rural lifestyle, which often entails withstanding domestic abuse and marginalization. Rural indigenous women in Ecuador experience a disproportionate amount of domestic violence.
In all of Ecuador, six out of ten women have reported domestic abuse at some point in their lives. However, the statistic rises to 68% among rural indigenous women.

World Humanitarian Day is celebrated on August 19th around the world. It was on this day in 2003, 22 aid workers were killed in a bombing at the UN headquarters in Baghdad. On World Humanitarian Day we remember those who have lost their lives in humanitarian service and pay tribute to those that are making a difference through their hard work and sacrifice. These are our WFP humanitarian heroes changing lives in Ecuador.

As Ecuador further modernizes, it may be able to find stable ground by drawing upon knowledge from its past. The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in Ecuador is using ancestral knowledge (conocimiento ancestral) to effectively reduce the impacts of climate change by helping Ecuadorian people to successfully adapt.
