In Ethiopia, the WFP Purchase for Progress (P4P) programme buys large amounts of maize from smallholder farmers via cooperative unions and is helping transform livelihoods, but bringing women farmers into the programme has remained a major challenge. To overcome that challenge, WFP launched a P4P gender initiative three years ago, which is starting to bear fruit in Ethiopia.

WFP is expanding its safe-stove initiative in Ethiopia by distributing 24,000 additional safe, fuel-efficient stoves in the Ahmara region. The project, which began five years ago thanks to funding from Germany’s KfW Development Bank, will also be generating revenues from carbon credits that WFP will reinvest in food insecure communities. We met a few families to see the benefits of these stoves for their lives and their environment.

Zemada Kebeb is a farmer living in Ethiopia’s drought-prone Tigray region. In the past, recurring droughts threatened to push her and her four children into chronic hunger. But now, with the help of a resilience-building initiative called R4, Zemada no longer fears a lack of rainfall and has enough stability to start growing new things like mangos.

In 2011, WFP received its largest contribution from the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), US$56 million for a five-year programme in Ethiopia. Although WFP had been assisting people living with HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia since 2003, the PEPFAR contribution enabled a new dimension of assistance, where people are now provided with the ability to address their households’ food and nutrition requirements and send their kids to school. Two women reflect on the impact that this generous donation has had on their lives.

This week we celebrate World Humanitarian Day—a time to recognize our staff who are in the field, every day. Since conflict began in South Sudan over eight months ago, more than 180,000 people have sought refuge in neighboring Ethiopia. Fatmata Kokobaye is head of WFP office in Gambela responsible for providing life-saving support to South Sudanese refugees. Gambela is also an important corridor for food assistance to get into South Sudan, by air, land or river. Here she tells us her story.
