In line with the government’s ‘cash first’ policy for social transfers, the World Food Programme (WFP) is preparing the introduction of cash or voucher transfers in Ethiopia. This market assessment offers considerations that inform the design of such interventions for WFP. The report relies on secondary data analysis, consultations with WFP partners and a primary data collection exercise that covered 17 markets of Amhara, Somali and Tigray regions in October 2012.

Ethiopia - Cross Border Trade, 2011

The Market Analysis Sub-group of the Food Security and Nutrition Working Group (FSNWG) monitors cross-border trade of 88 food commodities and livestock in 26
cross-border markets in eastern Africa in order to quantify the contribution of formal and informal cross-border trade to food security in the region.

The food inflation rate continued decreasing since the peak of 61.1% in February 2009 to below zero for the last three consecutive months whilst the non – food inflation rate remained stable around 17.7 percent.

The objective of the monitoring is to provide quantitative and qualitative information for food security analysis. The monitoring includes both formal and informal cross border trades of important food commodities relevant for food security between Ethiopia and Sudan.

The food security and vulnerability study for urban Ethiopia has largerly been necessiated by the new increased food insecurity stemming largely from the global economic downturn and high food prices, which has been translated to the country partly through high inflation rates. The impact of inflation has been one key element that has resulted in increased food insecurity in urban areas.

The study was conducted in 18 selected urban centres spread across the country, covering eight regions including: Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa cities; Harar townl and selected towns in Tigray, Amhara, Oromiya, Somali and Afar regions.
