World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

WFP has so far reached more than 127,000 beneficiaries in every region of Georgia, excluding South Ossetia and Abkhazia, with more deliveries taking place today. Meanwhile, thousands of people have been returning to Gori, where the last military checkpoints were dismantled and abandoned over the weekend.

WFP today dispatched a truckload of food to the conflict-affected town of Gori, where it has been unable to reach people due to insecurity.

Two cargo aircraft chartered by WFP set off this morning for Tbilisi, Georgia, with 34 metric tons of high energy biscuits for the thousands of people in Georgia displaced by the recent conflict.

WFP has started providing food assistance to more than 2,000 people displaced since fighting began in the region of South Ossetia on Friday.

WFP welcomed a US$100,000 donation from Japan to support the agency’s relief and recovery operations in Georgia, including providing food assistance to some 8,000 of the most vulnerable people in the country.

WFP has warmly welcomed Poland’s increased support for WFP in addition to its firm commitment to boost contributions towards the eradication of hunger and poverty around the world.

WFP has heralded Poland’s largest single donation of US $1 million to its operations in Afghanistan, Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Georgia and Tanzania.

WFP welcomes a US$1.25 million donation from USAID’s Food for Peace programme which bridges a serious gap in food supplies that has been threatening WFP’s relief and recovery operation in Georgia.
