The World Food Programme on Thursday lauded Ghana’s School Feeding Programme, describing it as one of the few home grown ones in the world.

The World Food Programme (WFP) has presented equipment and materials to 10 farmer groups under its Purchase for Progress (P4P) Initiative, to help improve rice production in northern Ghana. (..) Mr Aboubacar Koisha, head of the sub-office of the WFP in Tamale, presented the facility to the smallholder farmer groups at a ceremony in Tamale on Monday. In an address read on his behalf, Mr Ismail Omer, WFP Country Representative said the presentation of the equipment and the materials marked the fulfilment of the second objective of the P4P Initiative.

The World Food Programme (WFP) has trained a total of 1,344 small-holder farmers under its “Purchase for Progress Initiative”, building their competencies in technical, business and organizational development. An organization of 50 female rice farmers in Ghana recently received training, with U.S. help, to develop their businesses and increase crop production. (..) Amsig Resources Chief Executive Officer Gina Odarteifio connected Otibo's group to an important new buyer, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). WFP is a reliable customer: Through its Purchase for Progress program, it buys 100-kilogram bags of rice from the women at prices higher than they would receive in local markets.

Former president John Agyekum Kufuor will on Thursday pick up his prize as joint winner of the 2011 World Food Programme Prize at Iowa in the United States of America. (..) Former president Kufuor who is accompanied by his wife, Theresa Kufuor to pick up the award will deliver the keynote address at the World Food Prize Laureate Luncheon on Friday where he will be presented with the Laureate Diploma by the President of the World Food Program.

Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development today stressed Government’s determination to decentralise the School Feeding Programme in an effort to make the work of those implementing the programme less cumbersome.
