In collaboration with the Ghana Statistical Service, Ministry of Food and Agriculture, and other partners, the World Food Programme conducted the second Comprehensive Food Security and Vulnerability Analysis (CFSVA) in Ghana in 2012, following the first nationwide such survey conducted in 2009.
The 2012 CSFVA provides a general overview of the socio-economic and food security conditions in the country, while focusing extensively on the three most deprived and food insecure regions which were identified in the previous nationwide survey. A distinctive feature of the 2012 survey is the depth of analysis of the food security situation provided and the comprehensive picture of household food security in both rural and urban settings across the three northern regions. This is the first such survey to be conducted at district level across the three northern regions. Details such as food consumption patterns and household wealth are captured in district profiles.
The depth and wealth of information provided enables stakeholders in the food security and nutrition sector in Ghana, to tailor their interventions to address the unique needs of the most vulnerable people in each district.
The 2012 CFSVA was conducted in April-May which falls within the lean season in northern Ghana. This period is characterized by general food scarcity among poor households because by then, household food stocks are depleted and food prices are sky rocketing.
The Ghana survey was conducted with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and AusAid.

This report presents the results of the first nationwide food security baseline survey conducted in Ghana in November 2008. It provides an in-depth picture of food insecurity in the country and will inform WFP and partners’ ongoing and future food security, health and nutrition interventions.
