WFP Activities

WFP supports the Government of Guinea-Bissau to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by helping vulnerable rural populations in the struggle against poverty. Activities are focused on populations in the highly food-insecure regions of Bafatá, Gabu, Oio, Biombo, Quinara, Cacheu and Tombali. WFP also contributes to strengthening the capacity of the Government and local NGOs to establish and manage food assistance and hunger reduction programmes. Government capacity-building emphasizes the need to lay the foundations for the shift from recovery to development.

As part of its relief and recovery operation, WFP collaborates with FAO, UNICEF and WHO in a joint programme that aims to reduce child malnutrition and mortality by integrating and boosting existing efforts in these sectors. The programme aims to strengthen national capacity in the health and nutrition sectors, empower communities and make positive contributions to national and international partnerships.
WFP is also implementing a Bilateral Project financed by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The project, known as the Project Bas Fond (Lowlands Management Project), aims to reduce poverty and improve food security through land reclamation for rice cultivation activities. The PBF is active in Bafatá and Gabu regions (Contuboel and Sonaco sectors).
