Almost one year ago, the ground began shaking in Haiti and the lives of millions were changed forever. What came after the quake was a disaster that stretched WFP’s humanitarian expertise to the limit, challenged our response through its complexity and daunted us with the sheer scale of its impact on the Haitian people.

PORT AU PRINCE – In the aftermath of Hurricane Tomas, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has been working closely with the Haitian authorities and other partners to distribute high-energy biscuits and ready-to-eat meals (MREs) to thousands of people who had taken refuge in schools and churches in the south-west of the country. In some of the most storm-affected, such as Jeremie, distributions began within hours of the first heavy rains.

ROME – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today thanked the Swedish government for pledging record levels of support in 2011 for programmes that provide food assistance to the most vulnerable people around the world. Sweden’s contribution to WFP -- which is fully flexible and can be used to provide food assistance wherever it is needed most -- is expected to reach SEK 556 million in 2011, a 15 per cent increase on the 2010 contribution.

This week Haitians in Jacmel who have been clearing rubble, installing drainage and making other community improvements are receiving cash and food wages as part of WFP’s new food and cash for work programmes. For most people these are the first wages they’ve earned since the earthquake struck on January 12.
