Rural farming communities in Haiti are vulnerable to floodwaters that wash away top soils and in some cases destroy their entire livelihoods. In 2014, WFP is renewing its commitment to help communities in Haiti protect top soils along with their crops and homes by building infrastructure with the support of local and international partners.

PANAMA CITY –The World Food Programme (WFP) has appointed Miguel Barreto, a Peruvian national, as its new Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean. His duty will be to  oversee WFP operations  across the region.

The National School Meals Programme is the single largest food safety net in Haiti, feeding 685,000 children every year. For many families, school meals are the greatest incentive to keep their children in education. The World Food Programme urgently needs US$ 11.3 million to continue its planned school feeding activities in Haiti.

An increasing amount of the food used in WFP's food assistance operations in Haiti is bought from local farmers. It's a way of supporting the Haitian economy, while reducing food insecurity and malnutrition. WFP's calls for competitive bids go out to Haitian farmer organizations and end up benefiting farmers such as Serge Milius, who heads a smallholder farmer association in Fonds-Verettes. The most recent call, last November, was for 1,750 metric tons of rice for school meals.

HIV/AIDS

Many people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide are not able to get enough to eat. Health complications mean that many lose their jobs and their livelihoods are threatened. In Haiti, WFP plays a crucial role in protecting patients being treated for HIV/AIDS and their families by ensuring that the food they receive contributes to their health, safety and dignity.

The World Food Programme (WFP), the Cooperative For American Relief EveryWhere (CARE) and Action Contre la Faim (ACF) have launched a new food safety net and nutrition program funded by USAID. 'Kore Lavi' will cover 23 provinces across 5 regions in Haiti over the next four years and aims to support the Haitian government to improve access to locally produced food for the most vulnerable families in Haiti.
