Haiti's epic earthquake struck exactly three months ago. While the country recovers, the annual hurricane season looms -- just seven weeks away. In 2008, three hurricanes and one tropical storm lashed Haiti, killing 800 people, destroying 27,000 homes and triggering a severe hunger crisis.

United Nations member states and international partners have just pledged $5.3 billion for the next 18 months to begin Haiti’s path to long-term recovery from the January 12 earthquake. In the wake of the March 31 donors' meeting at UN headquarters in New York, here is a look back at what WFP has achieved so far and a look forward at the challenges in the immediate future.

The Jan 12 earthquake left sisters Christelle and Caroline Saintil with no parents and no home. After weeks of uncertainty, living with a relative who couldn’t support them, they are now finding their feet in a WFP-supported orphanage, where regular meals help provide the sense of finally having a home again.

WFP, the Haitian government and food experts from NGOs have just completed a comprehensive assessment which confirms the scale of the ongoing food needs in Haiti two months after the earthquake. The survey will shape policies to rebuild food security in the months ahead.

The Ecole Bethlehem in Port-au-Prince was badly damaged in the quake and the building is inaccessible. But the schoolyard has been declared safe and the kitchen and toilet are still functioning. So it has become one of the focal points of WFP's new school meals programme - open to all kids of school age in the area.

Alongside general food distributions which have now reached more than 2.5 million people since the earthquake, WFP has started a nutrition drive. We are delivering specialised food to prevent malnutrition to 53,000 children under five and 16,000 pregnant and breast-feeding mothers.

WFP’s deliveries of food to earthquake survivors in Haiti have prioritized distributions to women, to ensure that all family members - men, women and children - receive the nutritious food they so badly need. In most cases women in person are collecting rations for their households.
