FEWS NET reports that, local availability of maize is lower than normal in Honduras due to lower or near to average production in 2012. In September 2013, wholesale white maize prices were 15% above the five year average in Tegucigalpa. Although they have begun to decline seasonally, maize prices are expected to remain above-average through the end of the year.
The seasonally adjusted staple commodity price increased for beans in Honduras (+12%). Diesel prices increased between August and September by 2.4%, while gasoline declined by 1.2% following the month-on-month (m/m) 3.9% increase recorded in the previous month. In the Latin America and Caribbean region, the highest year-on-year consumer price index (CPI) changes over the quarter were recorded in Bolivia (5.1%-7.1%) as well as in Honduras (5-5.6%).
