The urban food security situation has deteriorated in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnakata and Madhya Pradesh, while Punjab showed a marginal worsening till 2006, says a Report on the State of Food Insecurity in Urban India released here on Friday by Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy. (..) “Taking into account the fact that urban inequality has worsened since 1991, the implications for the food security status of the urban poor or slum dwellers are worrying to say the least,'' said the report prepared jointly by the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation and the World Food Programme.

In a bid to bring transparency in the public distribution system (PDS), biometric ration cards were launched in Orissa Wednesday, an official said. (..) Designed jointly by the state government and the World Food Programme (WFP), the hi-tech biometric registration system aims to ensure that subsidised food goes only to those entitled to it. 'We are very proud of our partnership with the Orissa government in our effort to enhance the efficiency of the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS),' WFP India Representative Mihoko Tamamura said.

Madhya Pradesh Minister(..) on Monday inaugurated a nutrition project specifically for the benefit of the marginalised Sahariya people of the state. The project-Wheat Flour Fortification- will be implemented in the districts of Guna, Shivpuri and Sheopur by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), in collaboration with the Department of Tribal Welfare of the Government of Madhya Pradesh. WFP India Deputy Country Director Matthew Mcilvenna said: “This project is the first of its kind, as it will enable us to reach out to the highly undernourished and marginalised Sahariya community with fortified food directly at the village level.”

Japan has donated $9 million to the WFP for the rehabilitation of civilians displaced by last year’s military operations against the Taliban in Pakistan’s restive northwest, it was announced here Tuesday. “WFP is extremely grateful for this generous and very timely donation from Japan. Those who have already suffered the worst effects of war are now desperately in need of sustainable interventions that will help them to re-start their lives and livelihoods,” Wolfgang Herbinger, the WFP representative in Pakistan, said in a statement.

In a significant move against poverty, the Scheduled Tribes Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday appealed the United Nation to provide food security to more than six lakh nomadic families of their tribe under "World Food Programme" (WFP) as they are suffering from intense food-deficit due to low-income and deficiency of resources. In a written request to UN Secretary General with an appeal to Josette Sheeran, Executive Director of "World Food Programme" (WFP) (..) it was urged upon to cover the nomadic Gujjars and Bakerwals residing in Kashmir under UN Food Programme for India.

The Japanese government said it will allocate 7,50,000 dollar fund for improving the health and nutrition in rural areas of Madhya Pradesh, a move it says a part of its ''commitment towards eradication of global hunger and malnutrition'.(..)In response to a request from the United Nations WFP, the allocation is made from Japan's WFP International Emergency Food Reserve (IEFR) to train local women to deliver improved services such as vaccination for infants and supplementary nutrition to curb malnutrition.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) on Monday awarded school students for writing essays about innovative strategies to fight hunger in India, said an official release. WFP had conducted the essay-writing competition to mark the World Food Day. (..) Giving away prizes, Matthew Mcilvenna, Deputy Country Director WFP Delhi, said: “It was very encouraging to read of the compassion students have for people who never have enough to eat. The world’s poor are going through a difficult time with high food prices and we need to push ourselves harder in order to help them.”
