When fighters captured Qaraqosh town in the heat of early August, Basseema had little time to think ahead to winter. Like thousands of other Iraqi Christians who fled the violence, carrying nothing to help them withstand the cold, she faces a painful festive season.

Since fleeing their home in August, Hanaa and her family have rarely had the chance to choose what food they eat—at least until recently. WFP food vouchers are now giving them and many other vulnerable Iraqi families the power to pick their own meals, bringing a measure of nornality into their lives.

Trapped in their homes and villages for many weeks, thousands of Yazidi civilians fled the area taking refuge in Duhok Governorate after militant groups killed many of them. The Kurdistan region is home to hundreds of thousands of displaced families fleeing many parts of Iraq. Conflict and political instability have forced 1.2 million people from their homes. Cars, packed with children, have been fleeing into the Kurdish region, where hundreds of thousands of people are already sheltering. Sabri Gheeru is one of them.

Cars, packed with children, have been fleeing into the Kurdish region, where hundreds of thousands of people are already sheltering.

In spite of the challenging security situation and the fact that displaced populations are on the move, WFP has successfully distributed food to more than 438,000 people in 10 governorates across Iraq. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced by the crisis that first hit Mosul in mid-June and spread to surrounding cities and governorates. In recent days, a rising number of Iraqis have found themselves stranded around Iraq’s Sinjar Mountains, fleeing violence. Since 4 August, WFP has set up four emergency kitchens in Dohuk and Lalish, enabling the food agency to assist more than 100,000 people who have fled the Sinjar area.

When violence broke out in Samaraa city in Iraq’s Salaheldin governorate, Umm Ibrahim, an Iraqi woman in her eighties, took shelter with nine other family members inside a relative’s garage. Two nights later, they fled to Peramagroon district in the nearby Suleymaniyah governorate, where they now live inside a public school with twelve other displaced families.

As violence escalates in Mosul and neighbouring cities in northern Iraq, thousands of people are fleeing their homes in search of safety. Esmat Ahmed, an Iraqi man in his late twenties, left his house and belongings in Hay El Baker village in Mosul last month. He braved the scorching heat and closed-off roads to walk to the neighbouring town of Qasrok, located in the Kurdistan region of Iraq where he now shares a small rented apartment with 14 other family members.

WFP is in emergency mode in northern Iraq as it goes about organizing a food assistance operation for half a million people hit by the latest conflict there. Ertharin Cousin travelled to the region this week to see the impact of this new humanitarian crisis first-hand. She found some displaced families living in extremely harsh conditions and highlighted the need for international support.

ERBIL, IRAQ – As the exodus continues of Syrians into the Kurdistan region of Iraq, the leaders of the UN refugee agency and the World Food Programme paid tribute to the government here for giving refuge to almost 200,000 people, including some 47,000 arriving in the last two weeks.

The conflict in Syria has led thousands of Syrians to flee seeking safety in neighbouring Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt. Food is one of their priority needs and WFP is responding with an operation to assist refugees in all five countries. WFP is providing assistance mainly through food vouchers redeemable in local shops as well as direct food distributions in some areas where beneficiaries cannot access markets easily.
