The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is ready to increase the existing loans to Kenya to support disaster relief and boost recovery. (..) The Horn of Africa is undergoing severe drought and famine, with the World Food Program pointing out that about 800,000 refugees have fled the famine in Somalia alone to go to Ethiopia, Kenya, and Djibouti.

When World Food Program executive director Josette Sheeran visited hunger sites in Kenya and Somalia last month, she brought along Peter Bakker, the former chief executive of the transportation company TNT and a current U.N. ambassador against hunger. Bakker is helping rally businesses to provide support for those affected by the drought and famine in the Horn of Africa.

Saudi Arabia has donated 50 million dollars to help save children in famine-hit Somalia, the World Food Programme said in a statement received by AFP on Monday. (..) The contribution in response to a WFP appeal for funds "will help us save the lives of thousands of children before they fall into severe stages of malnutrition, at which point it would become impossible to keep them alive," said WFP executive director Josette Sheeran.

China has donated 16 million U.S. dollars to the World Food Program (WFP) to support its famine-relief operations in Somalia, said a WFP press release on Sunday. It is China's largest single donation to WFP, adding the country's donation to WFP this year to 20 million U.S. dollars, according to the release.
